Why I’m Beginning Again in My Fifties
Since entering my fifties, I have found myself returning to one question.
Where am I headed?
Looking back, I have come a long way. I was born and raised in Korea and moved to the United States as an adult. In this unfamiliar country, I worked while going to school and became a citizen. I found a job, married, and became the father of three children. I came to know Jesus Christ and began a new life as a Christian. I also started my own business.
At each turning point, I stepped through another door. Yet somewhere inside, I often felt as though I was going in circles. I had been busy. I had worked hard. Still, I wasn't sure I was truly moving forward.
I think I gave more attention to speed than to direction. Afraid of falling behind and eager to achieve more, I kept my foot on the accelerator. Before I had taken a good look at where I was going, I had already decided I needed to get there faster.
Along the way, I stumbled, sometimes over the same mistakes. Hard work did not always bring the results I had hoped for. Things I had struggled to begin sometimes stalled. Each time, I thought the answer was to pick up speed again. Only now am I beginning to understand that going faster without knowing your direction can simply leave you more exhausted and farther off course.
That is why I want to begin again in my fifties.
By beginning again, I don't mean erasing the life I have lived or becoming someone entirely different. Nor do I mean drawing up another ambitious plan for success and pouring everything I have into reaching it.
For a while, I want to take my foot off the accelerator. I want to look honestly at where I have come from, where I stand, and where I ought to go next. Rather than moving as fast as I can, I want to make sure I am moving in the right direction. I want to build a steadier life on the inside, one that can sustain the journey ahead.
So I have decided to start by writing.
Putting my life into words may help me see my choices more clearly: what I chose, what I missed, and where I lost my way. Instead of hiding my failures and false starts as an embarrassing past, I want to discover what they have to teach me. Not to condemn the person I was, but to better understand the person I am and discern the path ahead.
This blog is not the success story of someone who has found all the answers. It is the journal of an immigrant father finding his place between Korea and America, between failure and hope, and between the person he has been and the person he hopes to become.
I am still learning. I am still finding my way with English and American culture, still making countless decisions about family, faith, work, and business. I will make more mistakes. Sometimes I may lose my way again. But I no longer want to respond by simply pushing harder. When I stumble, I want to pause, notice what I have learned, and take another step.
When I look back, I also see how much there already is to be grateful for. I have a wife I love and three children. Through Jesus Christ, I have found new life in faith. To have learned, worked, built a family, and made it this far in a country that was once unfamiliar is, to me, a profound gift of grace.
I am not beginning again because the life behind me was inadequate or meaningless. I am beginning again to recognize more deeply the grace I have already received, to give thanks for it, and to care more faithfully for the family, work, relationships, and opportunities God has entrusted to me. I want to cherish the fruit my life has already borne, and I hope that in the years ahead it will grow fuller and more mature, with enough to share with others.
That is why I want to begin again in my fifties.
If you, too, have worked hard and still feel as though you are standing in the same place, perhaps we can slow down together for a moment. We are not too old to begin again.
Maybe what we need is not greater speed, but one honest step we can take today.
